CUST was previously known as Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics founded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1958.

Since 1958, CUST has been striving for innovation in higher education. Now 5 decades later, CUST has emerged as a provincial key university with both national and international reputation for its academic research, especially in the fields of optics and mechanics as well as interdisciplinary and professional programs.
